Lyle Parker is the new minister at Community Christian Church

Concert series continues in Mohawk

MOHAWK — The free Music at Mohawk concert series is back for a second year, with performances outside Mohawk United Methodist Church, 2045 W. County Road 400N in Greenfield.

Concertgoers may bring lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and nonalcoholic beverages. Parking is free in the south church parking lot, with free handicap parking in the west lot.

6-8 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 5): The Occasional Blues Band

The Occasional Blues Band is a four-piece band that plays the blues as well as gospel, Motown, some classic rock and a bit of country and jazz.

6-8 p.m. Aug. 12: Bryan and Yvonne Hutson

The husband-and-wife duo Bryan and Yvonne Hutson are speakers and vocalists who perform mostly around the Midwest, sharing the love of Christ through song, word and personal testimony.

Community Christian welcomes new pastor

NEW PALESTINE — Lyle Parker is the new pastor at Community Christian Church in New Palestine.

He succeeds Todd Beale, who has been named CEO/administrator of the Christian Churches Pension Plan and assumed those duties July 1.

Parker has 25 years of ministry experience and said he has a heart for families and service to the surrounding community. He earned a Ph.D. in ministry leadership from Johnson University in 2021 and is also an adjunct professor at Kentucky Christian University.

Parker and his wife, Andrea, have been married 24 years and have two college-age sons. Andrea teachers at Hawthorne Elementary School in Warren Township.

“I am really excited about serving the church and the people of New Palestine and the surrounding communities!” he wrote in a message to the Daily Reporter.

AWANA registration open

GREENFIELD — Brandywine Community Church is accepting registration for AWANA, a weekly children’s program that promotes Bible literacy and also includes games and annual mission projects such as Operation Christmas Child.

Children who are 3 years old and potty-trained can join AWANA, and the program runs through sixth grade.

It meets from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesdays at the church, 1551 E. New Road. It starts Aug. 9 and runs through April.

Love INC gathers hygiene items

GREENFIELD — Love INC is conducting a product drive for the Household and Hygiene Outreach Gap Ministry at St. James Lutheran Church.

You can drop off any of the following items at the Love INC office located at 630 N. State St.: laundry soap, fabric softener or dryer sheets, trash bags, tissues, paper towels, toilet paper, all-purpose cleaner, window cleaner, bathroom cleaner, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, different-size zip-lock bags, men’s and women’s deodorant, body lotion, hand soap, cotton balls, cotton swabs, shampoo/conditioner, body wash and toothpaste.

Church launches art gallery

GREENFIELD — There is a new summer art exhibit in the 23 East Gallery, housed in Greenfield Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 23 East St. in downtown Greenfield.

Twenty-four children have artwork displayed in the latest exhibit, “By Kids … For Kids.” A special reception will take place Aug. 13 following 10 a.m. worship service. Then you may meet the artists, see the exhibit and get acquainted. The gallery is also open Monday-Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Aug. 31.

“Our purpose is to make the arts a vital part of our community’s life and worship,” church leaders said in a news release. “Through performances and creations, we encourage using the arts as a platform for education, entertainment and glorifying God. We are committed to provide our congregation and the surrounding community with opportunities to celebrate and embrace the arts. Based on Colossians 3:23, we desire spread God’s message to everyone with all our hearts.”

The gallery opened last winter with new exhibits rotating every three months. Merlyn Winters, pastor, planted the idea, and it’s now in its ninth month.

Grief Share available in Knightstown

KNIGHTSTOWN — Grief Share is a faith-based grief and recovery seminar meeting throughout the year at Knightstown Friends Center.

It offers help and encouragement for adults after the death of a spouse, family member, child or best friend.

Seminar videos and discussions include: “Is This Normal?” “The Challenges of Grief,” “Grief and Your Relationships,” “Why?” and “Guilt and Anger.” The 13-week agenda features fellowship, light refreshment, videos and discussion.

Cost is $20 for materials (workbook), and if cost is prohibitive, there are scholarships available.
